Leslie Ishii attended the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, China in 1995 as a delegate and artist. She has since created curriculum regarding leadership training for artists at University of California, Irvine (UCI). This was the commencement of her Self Starter course at UCI. Leslie is currently completing a workbook that will accompany the artist leadership training course. The working title is Self Starting: Abolishing the Starving Artist Myth. The workbook will become more widely available later in 2005.

Leslie has also developed and teaches a leadership/diversity training course for artists at the American Conservatory Theatre. She is also the member of a team of artists that work with Morrison-Foerster International Law Firm regarding diversity training.

In 2002, Leslie founded, with partner Karen Samski, Virgo Productions, to develop projects and curriculum dedicated to creating social and world change. Virgo Productions is currently producing a documentary featuring the poetry and life’s work of San Francisco Poet Laureate, Janice Mirikitani. The working title of the project is Sister When You Speak, You Spread Our Wings. Another documentary in development, currently titled, The Sandwich Project, explores the issues of forced homelessness through the eyes of a Japanese American couple, WWII Internment survivors, who have volunteered at St. Martins De Porres Men’s homeless shelter for 17 years.

Virgo Productions just completed a short documentary in February 2005, featuring the life’s work of human rights activist, Yuri Kochiyama. This short documentary received rave reviews where it screened at the Japanese American Citizens League Annual Day of Remembrance event hosted by the University of Hawaii, Manoa, where Mrs. Kochiyama was the keynote speaker.

Leslie is also a playwright, director and short story writer and is currently developing a play called, Hidden, the story of a Japanese American family dealing with the issues and dynamics of disability [in a relative born in the Internment camps] and dementia in the mother of the family. She also continues to write and develop a collection of short stories called, 47th Avenue South, the recollections of a Japanese American girl who is third and a half generation and how she and her family broke the color line in their neighborhood starting in the late 1950’s.

As a performing artist Leslie Ishii received her training in many areas. Early on, Leslie graduated from the University of Washington with Bachelor’s degrees in Music Performance (Clarinet) and Music Education. Acting credits at the American Conservatory Theatre, where she also received her MFA as a Friends of ACT fellow, include Antigone directed by Carey Perloff, Utterances directed by Joesph Chaikin, A Christmas Carol and The Imaginary invalid both directed by Laird Williamson, and Twelfth Night directed by John C. Fletcher. Leslie performed on Broadway in James Clavell’s Shogun, The Musical in the principle role of Lady Fujiko. She has worked at the Mark Taper Form, South Coast Repertory, El Teatro Campesino, New Mexico Repertory, Northwest Asian American Theatre and other Seattle based theatres. She has also worked extensively in film and television and can proudly say she has worked in nearly every format from one hour drama to half-hour sitcom to soap operas to feature films to independent films. Leslie has also taught for twelve years and ran the conservatory for two years at East West Players Asian American Theatre in Los Angeles. She also served as Vice President and was a founding member of the Media Action Network for Asian Americans.

Self-Starting a project is a wonderful way to create a challenge for your own growth—your expansion. It gives you the opportunity to build confidence and define your unique style of artistry and leadership.

Self-Starting an idea you’re passionate about brings you to the self-knowledge you can make a difference in your own life and the life of others around you.

When embarking on a Self-Starting adventure, it is important to equip yourself with skills and support. The Self-Starting course provides an environment to nurture your creative spirit and honor your unique way of bringing an idea into manifestation.

The Self-Starting course often includes Mindmapping, meditation, goal setting, financial literacy training, proposal writing, project presentation, and individual coaching from me.

Self-Starting workshops and meeting groups are also designed to build a network giving you the opportunity to gather the support you need to develop your ideas. With the support of other Self-Starters, you can learn and grow quite readily and quickly.I have found there is always another Self-Starter willing to share their experiences and resources to assist a fellow Self-Starter to the next step.

The origins of the Self-Starting Course

I attended the United Nations World Conference On Women in Beijing, China in 1995.I shared with a University of California, Irvine (UCI) colleague how preparing and attending this conference was a profound experience. It changed how I saw my creativity and the creativity of other human beings, forever.

Together with this colleague and the Chairman of the Drama Department at UCI, we decided I should share my newfound insights and experiences since attending the United Nations Conference.

Through a Guest Lecturer position, I taught students how I organized, fundraised and built a sense of community with other artists.

I passed on these realizations:
You never need to wait again for permission to give voice to your creativity.

It is important to develop skills to honor this voice.

You never have to build an idea or project alone.

You can go ahead and bring your own ideas to light and produce them, whatever they are!”

It has been a decade and I have developed the Self-Starting course at UCI and it is now begging to be brought out further into the world!
